Four people were rescued from the terrace of the Notan Villa building at Khar West, after a fire broke out on the 4th floor of a 7-storey building Thursday morning. This was the second fire incident in the building in just over six months.

The fire brigade has suspected glitches in the internal fire fighting system of the building. As per law, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation can revoke the occupation certificate of a building if the firefighting system of a building is found faulty.

"The fire was reported at 10.25 am and the fire brigade team reached the spot at 10.52 am. The fire was spread to all sides in three hours," a report by the Disaster Management team stated.

The fire was extinguished with the help of 8 fire engines and 8 motor pumps who were called in after 1 pm.

"Four people, who were stranded on the terrace, were rescued by the fire brigade with the help of an aerial ladder platform. No casualty was reported," said Hemant Parab, Chief Fire Officer.

Past instances

In September 2021, a 40-year-old woman died after a fire broke out on the 6th floor of the same building and 49 people were rescued from the building at that time. The fire brigade had said it had found violations of fire safety rules."

"Yes, at that time the internal firefighting system was not working. However, it was rectified after a notice was issued to the society," said Parab. We will inspect and if the firefighting system is found to be not working, we will take action as per law," Parab added.

"We had not taken any action or cut off water supply and electricity, as this is a residential building," said the officer.

As per fire safety rules, the fire brigade sends notice to rectify systems and can prosecute concerned people. If the systems are not rectified, the BMC can revoke the occupation certificate of the building and residents will be asked to move out, said an official.

Second-time lucky

Four people rushed to the terrace of the building because the fire brigade had rescued them during the fire incident in September 2021. However, the fire officers have warned that this will not help every time. If the building was taller it could have been risky to rescue people with the help of an aerial ladder," said an official.
